

Sandy was born April 9, 1957 in Tacoma, Washington to Angus and Beatrice McDougall. He graduated from Timberline High School and then received his BA and MS in psychology from Western Washington University (WWU). While still a student at WWU, Sandy married Sheri Angie and had one son, Alexander (Alex). He then attended the University of Kentucky where he received a Ph.D. from the psychology graduate program in Behavioral and Neural studies.
After receiving his doctoral degree, Sandy joined the faculty at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) in 1991. During his 31 year tenure as a faculty member, Sandy was a devoted teacher, mentor and scholar. He was a staunch advocate for research on the CSUSB campus and was dedicated to creating opportunities for student research, particularly for first-generation college students and those from underrepresented groups. He was renowned for his advocacy and support of the students at CSUSB, in his classes, and in the student development programs he oversaw. In recognition of this work, he was named California State University’s Outstanding Professor in 2001. His greatest achievement however was the over 130 students, from fields such as Psychology, Biology, Biochemistry, Nursing, and Biopsychology he mentored in his laboratory and his student research programs.
On April 26, 1998, Sandy married his best friend from graduate school, Cynthia Crawford. They had one daughter, Kelsey, who was one of the greatest joys of his life.
Sandy was an avid sports fan. He was a long-time fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kings. He was particularly happy to see the Dodgers win the World Series in 2020. He always enjoyed watching tennis, golf, sumo wrestling, and curling. However, the game Sandy was best at was chess. He was an accomplished player and had won a number of regional chess tournaments. He especially loved teaching and playing chess against his daughter Kelsey.
Sandy’s other interests included collecting and reading books. He especially loved reading books on history as he had originally planned to major in the subject.
Sandy was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and Angus, his ex-wife Sheri, his uncle Richard Dolack, his dogs Tuffy and Jasmine, and his cat Winston.
Sandy is survived by his wife, Cynthia Crawford, his children Alex and Kelsey, his second mom Betty McDougall, his siblings Danny, David, Dean and Laurie, his aunt Margarite Dolack, and his cousins Marie, Richard and Lee Dolack.
