

Shelton Saburo Nakata was born in 1950 at Okada Hospital in Honoka'a, Big Island of Hawaii. He grew up in Waimea, and went to Waimea Elementary School on the Big Island. Shelton graduated high school with the Class of 1968 at the Hawaiian Mission Academy in Honolulu, Oahu. He then went to Pacific Union College (PUC) in Northern California, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Tech. After a close-call construction incident, he earned a second degree in Nursing at Pacific Union College.
In 1984, Shelton became a Registered Nurse (RN) and began his nursing career at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Later, in 1993, he started working at the California Department of Public Health, first as a "Medi-Cal" Utilization Management (UM) Review Nurse, and later as a Nursing Home Surveyor. He retired from the State job in May 2020.
Shelton is preceded in death by his parents, Yoshio and Hisako Nakata. He leaves behind his wife of almost 20 years, Patricia Nakata; brothers Roland (Carol), David, and sister Georgette (Sidney); nephews Jason, Aaron (Alicia), and Tony (Ada); nieces Kimberly and Kaitlyn; grand-nieces Annaliese and Aubrielle, and grand-nephews A.J. and Paxton.
