Walter Wayne Herring was born on October 11, 1947 in Beaumont, Mississippi to his parents, Wesley Wayne Herring and Blanche Freeman Herring. He went to school in Mississippi until he moved to California in 1960, where he graduated from El Segundo High School in 1965.
Wayne served in the United States Army at the age of 19, and attended boot camp at Fort Benning, Georgia. He continued training and completed his military police course at the Army Training Center in Ft. Gordon, Georgia, where he was also trained in civil and military law, traffic control, map reading, prisoner-of-war control, and self defense before serving his duty in Vietnam. While serving he was awarded the Good Conduct Metal, Vietnam Service Metal, National Defense Service Metal, and the Vietnam Campaign Metal for his honorable service and dedication.
For the majority of Wayne’s civilian career he was a Captain of an off shore supply vessel for an oil company for over 25 years. During this time, he married Betty Joyce Scott of Petal, Mississippi on February 14, 1976. They lived in Petal and were blessed with a loving marriage until her death in 1999.
A few years later, Wayne moved to California to live with his sister, Irene and her husband, Charles, until his passing on March 17, 2012 at the Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, California.
Wayne was a humorous man with a million smiles. He was young at heart and had a boyish charm. Despite his physical limitations he was very active and enjoyed any kind of adventure. Those who knew him understood his love for country music. This past year he enjoyed attending concerts such as Reba, LeAnn Rimes, Travis Tritt and others. His loved his family, music and his dog, Rocky, who continues to be cared for by his sister, Irene. Wayne was truly loved by all that knew him and will be deeply missed. We love you UB!
