William (Bill) Neal Miller passed away on January 11, 2020, at 90 years old. He was born November 4, 1929, to Paul and Jewel Miller in Amarillo, TX, the youngest of 2 sons. He grew up on his family’s 800 acre farm in Turkey, Texas, where his life-long love of farming began. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1946 and served in the Texas National Guard during the Korean War for four years.
He met his beautiful bride, Joyce Shurbet in high school, and the two were later married on the television show called “Bride and Groom” in 1952. They were twice blessed with daughters Evelyn and Melissa who became the center of their lives.
Bill earned his Bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master’s degree from Chapman University. He was a teacher and counselor for the Colton School District for over 30 years. In addition to being a counselor, Bill spent many years working for the Sun Telegram newspaper as a photoengraver. He also developed a residential real estate business and devoted his time to his rentals throughout his retirement.
Bill was a world traveler and loved working in the garden and following all sports. He was a long-time patron of the San Bernardino Symphony and Civic Light Opera at the California Theatre. He loved productions of all kinds, especially when his daughters, or grandchildren were performing. Above all else, he loved spending as much time as possible with his adoring family and grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, and brother Jim, and is survived by his 2 daughters Evelyn Newman & Melissa Whitney, 2 son-in-law’s Richard Newman and William Whitney, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. His memory will be deeply cherished, and he will be forever remembered for his kindness and generosity.
Bill’s memorial service will be held Monday, April 6th at 10:00 AM at Montecito Memorial Park at the Cypress Chapel.
