Edith Adelaine Stocks (Addie) was born and raised in Perry Georgia. She arrived with a boundless supply of curiosity and energy. Addie participated in varsity sports and musical pursuits at Perry High School.
Her sports and musical passions continued while she attended and graduated from Florida State University. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Addie’s college life was unique and continued along her lifelong curiosity. She was a member of the Florida State University Circus as a unicyclist and flyer on the trapeze and ropes. The neighbors in Perry grew accustomed to seeing her riding around Perry on her unicycle.
Her passion for music was energized at FSU. She loved music from Janis Joplin to classical opera. She always talked glowingly about meeting opera star Joan Sutherland. Also, her favorite opera remained Turandot and got goose bumps every time she heard Pavarotti singing the aria Nessun Dorma.
During her FSU years she worked at the World’s Fair in New York and loved the city. After graduation she moved to New York and worked at Columbia University in neurological research. She always referred to these as the “hippy” years.
Her professional career continued at Harvard, Woods’ Hole, and Johns Hopkins University. Her basic neurological research led her to years looking at the dementia process. She published many important research studies and presented them at professional conferences and research symposiums.
Addie landed in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins. Her love of sports reemerged, and she played on many adult women’s sports teams. She loved golf and snow skiing. Addie took a winter off to work at Lake Placid resort and loved downhill and cross-country skiing. She even took a few rides on the toboggan run. Ad is a “rabid” Yogi Berra fan who grew to love the Orioles.
She founded and coordinated the Western Howard County Youth Soccer League. The league grew from a ragtag group to providing a lifelong love of soccer for thousands of kids. She was inducted into the Howard County Community Sports Hall of Fame for her service.
One of Addie’s loves was and continued to be dogs, especially Golden Retrievers. She spent weekends at dog shows and training events. She was so proud of “Skillfor’s Ruff and Ready” who earned his championship.
Throughout her life Addie loved and nurtured her family relationships, especially the nieces and nephews. She loved her family and Lynne’s as well. I know all the people and critters who have gone before were waiting at the “Rainbow Bridge” to welcome her. They all missed her wry and inscrutable smile.
Enjoy the rest of the ride. After almost 50 years together on this green earth, I look forward to eternity with you and the whole gang.
