

Alta Thomann was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi and grew up in Tallulah, Louisiana. She graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1956, earning a Bachelor of Music degree. After graduation she moved to Washington, DC, where she met Ronald J. Thomann at the USO. They married on March 14, 1959, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill and later moved to Columbia, Maryland, in 1973 where they raised daughters Miriam Michelle and Rhonda Renee, and son Andrew. Alta was a lifelong musician and piano teacher. She was a choir member and would sing solos at Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia.
Alta had a great love for Scotland and traveled there many times over the years. She collected art and historical books about Scotland and was on the planning committee of the Anne Arundel County Scottish Games organization. She will be fondly remembered by her family, friends, and hundreds of piano students she had over many years. May she rest in peace.
She is survived by children Andrew and Rhonda, daughter-in-law Mimi, grandchildren Patrick and wife Niecy, Mark, Skye and fiancée Kevin, and great granddaughter Amaya.
Visitation will be held at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Rd, Columbia, MD 21045 on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery.
