Born on August 16, 1944, in Newport News, VA to Margaret Sheals (Weatherton) and Henry Noah Anderson, Anne grew up in Hampton, Virginia, with her older sister, LaVerne. Anne’s love for music blossomed early. She played the flute and piano with an ear for perfect pitch. She was deeply grateful for the access to graduate level classes as a student and graduate of Phoenix High School on Hampton University’s campus.
As an avid reader, Anne’s passion for literature and music led her to “The” Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. During her time at Howard, she formed lifelong friendships including one with Frank Hamilton, who would become her husband of 58 years. After graduation, Anne enjoyed teaching English to fifth and sixth graders for several years, first at Kramer Middle school in Anacostia, Southeast D.C. and later at Lincoln Junior High School in Northwest, D.C.. During this time, Anne and Frank married and began building a life together as partners and parents, rooted in faith and enduring love. Together, they became deeply connected to their Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia community.
As her family grew, Anne devoted herself wholeheartedly to encouraging the personal and professional ambitions of their four daughters Lisa, an attorney, Robin, a journalist and filmmaker, Allison, a nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and Jamie, a PhD neuropsychologist. She created a warm, welcoming home filled with delicious meals, comforting hugs, gentle and frequent grammar corrections, and constant encouragement to speak assertively and without complaint. She navigated her husband’s demanding medical training and career schedule with the joys and challenges of raising four girls with patience and love.
Once her daughters were older, Anne taught at Maryland New Directions in Baltimore, where she helped women earn their GEDs and build new opportunities for themselves.
During her leisure time, Anne enjoyed exercise classes, playing the piano, and nurturing friendships through church and her fitness community. She cherished traveling with Frank, especially their cruises, and trips to Aruba, which became treasured memories.
Anne had a remarkable gift for making others feel instantly welcomed. Her bright smile, quick wit, and ability to laugh at life’s quirks drew people to her. She lived with kindness and a steadfast commitment to family.
Anne is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Frank Hamilton, her daughters and their spouses, Lisa Hamilton, Robin Hamilton and her husband Mark Falzone, Allison Hamilton, and Jamie Hamiton and her husband Garland Malloy and numerous family and friends who will remember her for her strong faith and capacity to accept her illness with grace.
She met the Lord with peace and is now reunited with loved ones who went before her. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love lives on in all who knew her.
