There is no single word, nor enough words, to describe the magnitude of Anne Sobeck-McCabe’s presence on Earth. Anne was extraordinary in all facets of her life – especially in the fact that she never took a moment with her loved ones for granted. She is survived by her two sons, Scott and Ken McCabe, to whom she affectionately referred to as Scotty and Kenny, respectively. Throughout her life, Anne was a devoted spouse, friend, worker, and educator, but she was most proud of being a mother. Besides the blessings of Christ, nothing in life brought her more joy than motherhood.
Anne was born and raised in Hazleton, PA by her parents Michael and Agnes Sobeck. She was the youngest of three siblings, with two brothers named Eugene (Gene) and Michael (Mike) whom she loved deeply. Within the strong traditions of a proud, Slovak household she was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and carried a deep fear of the Lord with her throughout her life. She adored the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed to her daily. In her hometown, she attended St. Joseph’s parochial school and graduated from Bishop Hafey High School in 1977. Anne worked her way through college as a computer programmer at Bloomsburg State College where she attained a B.S. in Mathematics with a double-minor in Secondary Education and Computer Science in 1981. While in college, she was also a leader within their Catholic ministry and worked with fellow students to promote their faith. She also toured the country as a member of the school choir. It was also in college where she met the man she would be married to for over 30 years – Scott McCabe Sr. Even in the final years of her life after their divorce, she exercised consistent forgiveness and gratitude.
Throughout her career she held many positions. She was proud to have worked for GE Aerospace and was a pioneer for women in an otherwise male-dominated workplace. She endeavored to pursue an MBA specializing in Information Systems Management from Loyola College in Maryland throughout the nineties. However, at the birth of her second son, Kenny, she proudly shifted into flexible roles as a substitute teacher in the Howard County Public School System and various retail positions in order to spend more time with her children. Anne volunteered herself in many capacities within the schools and extracurricular activities of her children. She proudly served the guidance department at Scotty’s middle school and was a go-to timer for Kenny’s swim team, the CHS Sundevils. Anne never regretted taking the time to be with them, and in the twilight days of her life she mentioned how proud of them she was. She was proud that she managed to raise two boys into competent men.
At the time of her passing, Anne was employed by Macy’s as a sales representative at their location in Columbia, MD. In the words of one of her closest friends there, “she…stood out among the crowd for her personality and poise. She is a very well-read individual and can talk about any topic intelligently.” Reading books was a great comfort to her, and she kept it up as long as she could. In addition, she loved watching sports, playing tennis, bike riding, going to the movies, playing video games, watching television, museums, writing poetry, crocheting, dogs, and live performances such as music and stand-up comedy. She continued to love to sing throughout her life and was a member of the St. Louis Parish choir from time to time. When she wasn’t busy with her duties, she also loved travelling to her favorite sites. She looked forward to and cherished every trip to Gettysburg, PA, Annapolis, MD, the beach, and especially Williamsburg, VA and Disney World.
Anne, the light that you shed upon the world will not soon be forgotten. Rejoice in the grace of God in Heaven, and guide and protect us from the comfort of Paradise. Your love remains with us all the days of our lives. Rest in Peace.
