Barbara Lois August

Barbara Lois August of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023. She is survived by her son, Marc (Tim), her daughter, Ellen (Jason), five grandchildren, and her brother. She was 84.

A native of Chicago, she lived in Maryland for most of the last six decades. She was perhaps most proud of her years as the receptionist for the Joint Economic Committee, where she befriended senators and interns alike with her quick wit and easy smile. To her wide circle of friends, she was beloved for her generosity, her big heart, and her offbeat candor.

She was an avid competitive bridge player and an equally passionate sports fan who was an original season-ticket holder of the Washington Capitals and a minority owner of the Wilmington Waves baseball team. She also adored musical theater, singing along to cast albums even when her family begged her to stop.

A graveside service for Barbara will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Columbia Memorial Park, 12005 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD 21029.

The family will be receiving guests at the home of her daughter. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Jewish Health, nationaljewish.org.
