David P. (Pete) Chadwick, age 84, of Columbia Maryland, a retired federal government manager, amateur musician and active volunteer, died on September 16, at home in Columbia, of heart failure. Mr. Chadwick was born and raised in Port Huron MI, where his father was a US Customs officer. He graduated from Michigan State University with high honors and was a member of the band, which performed regularly at the Rose Bowl. He maintained his association with the band throughout his life, traveling to East Lansing for alumni band days and participating in two European tours with alumni band groups. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1957, and after completion of Officer Candidate School, was commissioned an ensign and assigned to the National Security Agency at Fort Meade MD. He was released from active duty in 1960 and became a civilian employee of NSA, where he remained until his retirement in 1990, serving in a variety of management positions. His final assignment was as chief of a production division. Mr. Chadwick was an active amateur musician throughout his life. He studied clarinet with Keith Stein and Norman Heim, and was an original member of the Maryland Clarinet Quartet, as well as a frequent soloist and ensemble player. He sang with the Maryland Chorus for 20 years, performing with major symphony orchestras in the Kennedy Center, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Casals Festival, and the Royal Festival Hall in London. The “Academia Notes” Barbershop quartet was a source of great merriment and social get-togethers for the families for more than 3 decades. Most recently he has sung with the Washington-area chamber chorus Voices XXI, as an original member, and served on the Board of Directors. These musical associations were the source of his closest and most enduring friendships. He was for many years an active member of Savage United Methodist Church, and the founding director of the Savage Ringers hand bell choir. He later was a member of the leadership team of Pathway, a new-start United Methodist church in Columbia, and most recently a partner at Bridgeway Community Church. In retirement, Mr. Chadwick held many volunteer positions, including Treasurer of the Elkhorn Landing Community Association, Volunteer Coordinator of the Candlelight Concert Society, and member of the Executive Planning Committee for the annual Heart Walk, raising support for and attention on lifestyle issues impacting heart disease. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Lijinsky Chadwick of Columbia, his step-daughter Catherine Lijinsky, and his children from his marriage to Mary “Lu” Chadwick: daughter and son-in-law Julie and John Schofield of Salisbury, MD, and son Scott, daughter-in-law Maki and grandson Miles of Kurashiki, Japan. His brother Elmer pre-deceased him. His marriages to Mary “Lu” Chadwick and Sue Holiway ended in divorce.
