Dorothea Shirley Nutter (Holmes), known to her family and friends as “Shirley,” passed away peacefully on Sept. 29 of pneumonia at her current home in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Shirley, who lived for over 60 years in Maryland, was born the first of three children in Halifax, Mass. She graduated from Whitman HS in 1946 and was co-captain of her basketball team. Shirley then worked for John Hancock in Boston for 7 years.
In 1952, she married Forrest W. Nutter and had 8 children in just 10 years. Forrest described his wife as “the most positive person he had ever known.” Shirley raised her happy family in Hyattsville, MD and was a member of the First Methodist Church of Hyattsville for many years. She always will be remembered for the love and sunshine that she generously gave to everyone.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Nutter; her parents Dorothy and Wellington Holmes; and her sister Beverly Ethier (David). Left to honor Shirley and keep her love in their hearts are her 8 children, Forrest, “Woody,” (Suzie), Scott (Debbie), Shelley Johnson (Robert), Bruce, Patty Jo Pena-Ariet (Carlos), Gregory (Bonnie), Duncan (Cindy), and Bradford (Alison); 29 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren (+ 1 on the way); her brother Warren Holmes (Rose); her cousin Evelyn Gatewood; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018 at noon at South Columbia Baptist Church, 8814 Guilford Rd, Columbia. Burial will follow at George Washington Cemetery, Adelphi. Donations in Shirley’s name to the American Heart Association will be appreciated.
