Biography

Elsa S. Shum of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2019.  A celebration of her life will be held on November 9th at 11:30 am at Witzke Funeral Home in Columbia.

In her 80 years of life, she lived with courage, strength and dignity.  She was born in China, grew up and was educated in Hong Kong, moved to England in her adulthood and emigrated to the United States in 1970.  In the US, she made homes in Pittsburgh, PA and Howard County, MD.  She was a talented gardener, cook, and homemaker.  She also taught Cantonese in several Chinese schools.

She met and married Dr. Lanson Y. Shum in England in the 1960's and began their adventures in the UK and USA.  Together, they supported many community building efforts among the Chinese-American people and organizations in PA and MD.  After being suddenly widowed in 1991, Elsa continued to live her life with vigor and independence: raising her children and grandchildren, gardening, and enjoying food and international travel.  She also continued to cultivate a loyal and loving group of friends and family.  She was grateful to all who supported her through her brief but intense illness and death due to a glioblastoma brain tumor.

Elsa leaves her children Eveline and John, sister Julia, and two brothers, nieces and a nephew.  She cherished and nurtured her large family, including her daughter-in-law, son-in-law and five grandchildren, through her presence, thoughtfulness and fine cooking.  She was a generous friend to many.  She will be dearly missed as a source of inspiration, practical wisdom, strength, friendship and love.
