Gerald Alfred "Gerry" Joireman, 88, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 after a brief respiratory incident. Gerry was a life-long supporter of the performing arts, loved dogs, jazz, ribs, and beer, and was always interested in learning new things and meeting new people. One of four brothers born in South Dakota, he grew up mostly in Spokane, Washington and loved to talk about the years he spent in Juneau, Alaska before moving to Silver Spring, Maryland and joining the federal government. Gerry was a proud 50-year member of the American Statistical Association, and was committed to give back and advocate for underserved communities through his work in civil service.
In Maryland, he met and married his wife Toni. They together were dedicated supporters of the Silver Spring Stage, and very much disagreed on how many Christmas decorations were appropriate (Toni: lots; Gerry: few) and mint flavored foods (Toni: loved; Gerry: loathed). They had a strongly shared value of acceptance and kindness for all, which their children are grateful to aspire to.
Gerry was predeceased by his three brothers and his wife. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, his two children - Chris and Heather, and his best friend Judie.
A celebration of his life will be planned for the fall. Donations in memoriam may be made to the American Statistical Association Student and Early Career Travel Fund at amstat.org.
