Born in Shanghai, China in 1944, he was the eldest of four children. While his family relocated to Macau in the 1960s, Hao Hong remained in China, where he pursued his Bachelor’s degree at the Nanjing Institute of Technology. In 1978, he married his beloved wife, Si Hong. Together, they moved to Macau and welcomed their daughter, Pui Iok (Alice), in 1981. In pursuit of new opportunities, Hao Hong immigrated to the United States in 1988, settling in Columbia/Ellicott City to be close to his siblings.
Through each of these moves, he started from the ground up— he learned a new language and worked his way up to make a comfortable but humble life for him and his family. Family remained his priority. The 4 siblings helped each other and their parents, who also immigrated and settled in the area. Hao Hong also spent 23 years working alongside his brother as a simulator engineer at the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies in Linthicum before retiring in 2014.
In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Si to her various table tennis competitions. Always an engineer, he also continued to tinker on various projects around the home. Lastly, he loved spending time with his 2 grandkids, Maddie and Nathan. He was a kid at heart and his grandkids adored him for that.
In fond remembrance, Hao Hong will be dearly missed for the impact that he had on countless lives, the generosity and kindness that he bestowed, and the enduring curiosity that defined him.
A visitation for Hao will be held Friday, April 5, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045. A private graveside service for the family will immediately follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 2150 Mount View Rd., Marriottsville, MD 21104.
