Janet is forever the poster child for career development. I learned so much by working alongside of her. Her enthusiasm for helping people to grow, shape, and own their careers was contagious. Our Career Development Team became bold and daring with her as a partner. We even declared ourselves UNSTOPPABLE, and had a lot of fun along the way.

Her family was such a big part of who she was, and I know their hearts are aching. I will miss the annual holiday letter highlighting their year together. I always thought it was such a cool way to show appreciation for the moments that matter. As a writer, she had a way of weaving words together in such a heartfelt way. Janet’s words pulled you in, made you think, and caused you to reflect on how blessed you were to know her. I thank God for allowing me to learn from her. My prayers are with her family and friends.

I met Janet as a fellow breast cancer survivor right after her diagnosis. Immediately, I felt a connection with her. Later, I kept running into her .... at UUCC services, at JHMI, and at various survivorship activities connected with HCGH Cancer Resource Center. She had a sparkle -even when she was not feeling so well. Janet had a way of being direct, authentic, and humorous all at the same time. She would make a statement and her eyes twinkled.
Family was foremost in her heart and mind... often speaking about her husband and sons. She was so proud of completing and getting her book published this summer. Janet was a truly compassionate, sensitive and caring person. I enjoyed our friendship very much and will miss her deeply.

I am very saddened to hear about Janet's passing. She was always an inspiration to work with and be around. She was truly an expert in the federal market and always willing to share her wisdom and experience. She will be missed by so many. Taken too soon.

I am so saddened to learn of Janet's passing. I've been an "off and on" colleague over the past 8 years. I always admired Janet's professionalism and spirit of collaboration with colleagues. Her deep knowledge of the Federal world was impressive. I've watched her in classrooms share that knowledge with energy and thoughtful insight. I feel like a "bright light" has been darkened too soon. My condolences to the family.

Janet Ruck was my coauthor and friend. She was innovative and creative; these were her organic skills. Janet taught me many life lessons: she intuitively knew how people would respond to the (sometimes boring) information we shared during our federal job search workshops; that trite phrases are perfectly fine to use when creating a written narrative; and that we can get on each other’s last nerve and still be friends. Janet was an avid writer, she kept ongoing journals, in which I am sure her children will find comfort when things settle. Janet surrounded herself with creativity. Each year I could count on a custom-made Christmas and Birthday card. Most impressive was Janet’s love of family. Her children may not know me, but I know them. Janet was proud of her family in a way that was deeply moving. I miss Janet. She left a deep hole in my spirit, one that cannot be easily filled.

I will miss Janet very much. For the past few years we worked together at MWA event's Janet was tireless in her efforts to support our projects. We had many laughs over coffee and dinner. Janet was always an enthusiast for the writer. Our conversations always seem to include the many moves of our children. Janet was dedicated to her family. 💜

On behalf of myself and the entire MWA board we offer our deepest condolences to the Ruck family. I first met Janet at through the Maryland Writers Association in 2011 and became fast friends. We worked together as leaders of the Howard Count Chapter, and then on the state board. Janet was an inspiration to many and will be deeply missed.

I first met Janet Ruck during a Maryland Career Development Association Board meeting. Janet was soon to begin her 2nd career and to retire with the rank of Captain from her 27 years with the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. She arrived at the Board meeting in her bright, dress white uniform and WOW-ed all of us who attended. She was articulate, inspiring, energetic and willing to be ALL IN! She eventually served as association President, 2004-2005.

In Janet's final online blog, she shared, “Yep, here I am, in the stage that is the culmination of all that has come before me. The weight of others’ opinions, coping, seriousness, and fun have created the possibility of the 60’s. It’s I-have-made-it-this-far-and-I-know-what-matters-to-me stage.”

To Janet's family and friends. I'm shocked and saddened to learn of your (our) loss of Janet. I'm a colleague who worked with her a number of years ago. She was delightful to work with, and was also a careful and effective facilitator. She will be missed by our team members and the students who worked with her.

I first met Janet back in 1990 when I first moved to Maryland. She was my new cousin-in-law's neighbor, and we met her and Carl at Clyde's of Columbia for dinner. Twenty-eight years later, I met Janet again at her beloved Haven on the Lake, a local studio where I work and where Janet went every single day to practice yoga and Pilates. When Janet walked through the door each morning, everyone's spirits were lifted by seeing her smile and listening to her cheerful, infectious laugh. Janet was the most positive, kind, loving person, and I am so grateful to have known her first as my yoga student and then as my friend. Her beloved Haven on the Lake community mourns her passing.
