"The Meadows family and the Jolly family have been close friends since the 1950s, and thus we have many happy memories from all those years -- playing bridge late at night while all the kids were sacked out, trips to the beach, backyard swimming at the Jolly home, even a 'reunion' in Zambia, Africa, where we spent a week at their place. I met Janice when interviewing for the US Bureau of Mines.  She was basically my mentor and friend during the years.  She guided me to join the professional organization Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME) and encouraged me to follow her through the offices.   She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and through her encouragement, my daughters and I joined and convinced my aunt and her daughter to join.  When the Bureau was not funded and Janice and Jim retired, she kept me updated to her through Christmas cards and email including trips to Antarctica, a raft ride down the Grand Canyon, and many trips to visit relatives all over the country.  I remember the year that her dog Bella died and how much she grieved.  The years that Jim had cancer, and all the joys of grandchildren.  She was a gifted scientist, but more so, a lovely person with multiple interest.  She leaves a vast legacy of touching the lives of others, and her leadership ability was way beyond her position in any organization. Janice, may you rest in peace.

Janice was my mentor and friend at the US Bureau of Mines encouraging me into the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. and leading me into progressive officers in the organization.  She and Jim decided to retire when the organization was "unfunded" and survivors moved to the US Geological Survey, but she kept in touch by Christmas cards detailing he visit to Antarctica, raft ride down the Grand Canyon, numerous trips to visit relatives.  Death of her beloved dog and Emails of the latest conservative political information.  Her friendship will be greatly missed, but her influence will last my lifetime.

Dear Jolly family, we are so sorry to hear of your mom's passing.  Janice was a good friend and mentor at the Bureau of Mines.  I loved her intellect, her humor and her wildlife videos.  She was truly a joy to know and we will miss her very much.

Please accept our sincere condolences for your profound loss.  Your mother was a deeply respected former colleague and a wonderful human being.

Back in the early nineties she was the pillar in the development of the International Copper Study Group statistical work.  Through her entire life she also strongly contributed to the copper industry with her knowledge, expertise and work.

Dear Jolly family, our sincere sympathy on the passing of your mother Jan. I have so many fond memories going back to the days at College park, events at your house, and of course all the way up to copper and zinc study group participation and travel. Jan was a superb participant as a professional in all she did and will always be remembered in the annals of minerals information. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the services.

Knowing Janice was a blessing. She was the ultimate professional: knowledgeable, insightful and well respected. As a person she was intelligent, friendly, witty and caring. I was very fortunate to know and work with Janice and I will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this time of loss.

We were so sad to learn of Janice's passing.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to her cherished family.  

Janice and Jim were valued US Bureau of Mines colleagues, fellow SME members and officers, and friends.  Like many who joined the USBM in those days, they brought not only their technical knowledge but also their practical experience gained through employment in the international mining industry and their passion for minerals.  Their expertise and many highly respected publications exemplify the very best in public service.

On a personal level, Janice's and Jim's interest in genealogy and family history was an inspiration to both of us.

I knew Janice and Jim through the USGS golf league, and am reminded of a time we played at the Purcellville golf course. I have only seen a hole-in-one once, in all the years I have played, and she shot it. It was a par three hole, and she hit the ball behind the pin, and drew it backwards into the hole. She walked up the hill to the green slowly, retrieved the ball, and saved it. I do not recall if she had ever shot another one, but to me, a golfer, seeing one is very special.

Brilliant, reserved, and self-sufficient--Janice is one of my heroes. She and Jim kept the global copper industry on track for decades without fanfare and seemingly without effort. But it was a huge effort, done with a smile and quiet sense of humor. When others offered help she almost always demurred. One dark night on a field trip, I saw Janice and Jim fixing their car in the motel parking lot. A knife-like rock has slashed a tire. No, they didn't need my help. As usual, they could handle it themselves. I will miss you, Janice!
