It is with great sadness that the Hunt family announces the death of Kermit Allan Hunt Jr. on February 5, 2023, at age 85. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, Linda Jane Hunt of Columbia, MD and daughters Carrie Hunt of Greenbelt, MD and Christine Szympruch of Clarksville, MD along with her husband Scott Szympruch. During his short illness from complications of cancer therapy, he was blessed with the opportunity to say goodbye to his family and friends. He felt that God had watched over him and provided him with a good and long life. He felt fortunate to “have been around and know a lot of good people and have two wonderful daughters” and to “have traveled to the National Parks and Israel.”
Allan was born in Washington, D.C., on July 5, 1937, to Kermit Allan Hunt Sr. and Mary Dorothy Slavin. He was the oldest of four brothers, Joseph T. Hunt Jr of Annapolis, MD., Stephen E. Hunt (deceased) and Thomas C. Hunt of Greenbackville, VA. He has 2 grandchildren, Emma Szympruch and David Szympruch.
He spent the first 24 years in Cheverly, MD, spending many hours as a child playing in the park across the street. He attended Cheverly Tuxedo Elementary School, St. Jerome’s Elementary in Hyattsville and Bladensburg High School, from which he graduated in 1955. He earned his Masters in Physical Education in 1961 from the University of Maryland College Park and taught Physical Education in Prince George’s County elementary schools for 30 years. He earned a Master’s in Counseling from Bowie State College. After retirement he got his real estate license and was involved in buying and renovating houses for sale.
In July 1965 he married Sharon L. Pickens and had 2 daughters, Carrie S. Hunt and Christine L. Hunt Szympruch. During these years he enjoyed going to Ocean City, going camping, and spending social time with friends from the “Super Club”, a group who had graduated from the University of Maryland. Al also enjoyed playing bridge with Sharon, who is a Life Master as had been both his parents. Allan loved working with children and coaching his daughter Christy’s soccer and basketball teams in South Bowie. Later in retirement, he coached children’s soccer in Columbia. Throughout his life he enjoyed watching the University of Maryland, the Redskins and the Ravens.
After his divorce, Allan met Linda while playing bridge. They were married in July 1993. Linda and Al made a decision to visit a special place every year while Al could still see them. They travelled to all the western National Parks and Canadian Rockies, Alaska, the Caribbean islands, Greece, Italy and the Holy Land. His favorite visits were Yellowstone, the Canadian Rockies, and the Holy Land. After he visited the Holy Land he felt there was no need to travel anywhere else. However, he continued to yearn for Ocean City during the summer and he insisted they spend January and February in the warmth of Florida.
Al will be remembered for his love for his family, his compassion and ability to listen to others, his patriotism, and his strong moral fiber.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Catholic Relief Services, Gilchrist Hospice or National Federation of the Blind.
