Marion Elizabeth Andrews was born March 22, 1942, the first born to the late Clarence and Edith Thomas in Washington, DC. Betty, as she was affectionately known, was a graduate of Cardozo High School and Martha Washington Nursing School, both in Washington, DC.
After graduating nursing school, she spent a number of years as a nurse caring for patients at Hadley Memorial Hospital and Washington Hospital Center. Before retiring from her most rewarding role with Howard County Public Schools as an instructional assistant, she also worked for Columbia Association as a summer pool assistant and before and after school care leader.
She was extremely passionate about the wellbeing of others, especially children. When she wasn’t caring for her family or shopping for her many grandchildren, she could be found spending time at a casino or having lunch with her close friends from her days working at Harper’s Choice Middle School. She was a joy to be around and continues to make everyone smile with fond memories.
On August 17, 2015, Betty Andrews was granted her wings. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 50 years, Joseph; daughter, Tracey Jamison; stepdaughters Karen Bernard and Michelle Prout; grandchildren Justin, Reese, Adrian, Kalenn, Brittany, Bryce and great grandchildren Makenzie, Jayden, Avery, and Elijah; sisters Renee’ Scales and Joyce Thomas; and a brother, Andre Thomas. Brothers Bruce Thomas, Troy Thomas and Clarence Thomas, Jr. and a sister, Jackie Dixon, predecease her. Betty also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loving friends.
