Nicholas Leonard Nelson
September 28, 2006 – July 6, 2020
Nicholas (Nic) Leonard Nelson succumbed to Ewings Sarcoma on July 6, 2020 at the age of 13. Nic was brave and strong in his fight, staying optimistic the entire time since his diagnosis. He continued to enjoy every good day and moment that he had and saw the silver lining in every obstacle presented to him.
Nic was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. He enjoyed being outside or on his xbox, spending time with his friends, and especially his dogs, Sequoia, Sadie in his younger years and currently Bella. He had a wry sense of humor and a bit of a wild streak. He loved fuzzy blankets. Nic played soccer and as he got older was drawn more towards individual sports and began training and competing in local triathlons. He enjoyed the process but never the 7 am Sunday riding practices at the local Dome in the winter. He was wasn’t always the fastest but he was the most tenacious and never gave up. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad.
Nic attended New Horizons Preschool and Government Hill Elementary where he was enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program. He enjoyed many extra curricular activities at school, participating in the Chess Club, Ignite, Battle of the Books, Math Derby, Lego League and Cross Country Running.
Nic had mature taste in entertainment. Hamilton was his favorite musical and we were fortunate to enjoy it on Broadway as well as in Baltimore. He spent time watching Saturday Night Live, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the Office, and many other borderline appropriate comedies. A highlight of a post-treatment trip to New York City was the Rockefeller Studio Tour and sampling ‘must-have’ foods around town with his Uncle Bill who knew the best spots for bagels and pizza. He was also able to enjoy an epic trip to Universal and Disney in February, taking in all that the new Star Wars land could offer.
While in treatment at Hopkins, Nic and his mom stayed in Columbia, MD with Oma and Opa. Also close by were his aunt, uncle and three dear cousins. He was able to spend time with them as if they were siblings. We also spent time at a family home in Elkton, MD on summer days enjoying many visitors there from Alaska and Minnesota.
Nic is survived by his parents, Peter and Jane Nelson and brother Jack of Anchorage, AK; Grandma Connie Nelson of Duluth, MN; John and Karen Dye (Oma and Opa) of Columbia, MD; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss him terribly. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Warren Nelson. In lieu of flowers, we ask donations can be made to one of three groups that had profound effect for Nic and our family: Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Division (to the sarcoma research group), Katie’s Handprint (Alaska based support for families affected with pediatric cancer), or Just in Power Kids (Maryland based pediatric cancer patient support).
A private service, with limited attendance due to COVID restrictions will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020 at Legacy Heritage Chapel at Angelus in Anchorage, Alaska. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
No public services are scheduled at this time. Receive a notification when services are updated.

It was my privilege to get to know Nic this school year. I could tell the first time I met him how curious, smart and strong he was. I am very sorry for his passing and wish I could have known him longer. He will certainly be missed! My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family!
