Bob was born on August 4, 1939 to Charles and Annabelle Compher and was raised in Baltimore City. He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1957. While at Poly, Bob played on the varsity baseball and football teams, and he was selected to play for Leone’s amateur baseball team, where he became one of their star pitchers. Bob loved to sing, and he did so in the Poly Chorus. Always popular with his peers, Bob was elected class president.
After graduation, Bob immediately commenced his career with the C& P Telephone Company of Maryland, where he held various management positions in the Accounting, Engineering, and Training departments. During his employment, Bob obtained a BS in Business from the Johns Hopkins University. He retired in 1991, but he continued his professional career for many years as a training consultant.
Bob was always involved in the life of his community; he served as President of the Ellicott City Optimist Club, and he coached their youth football team.
Bob and Susan followed the sun and their love of golf to The Glades Country Club in Naples, Florida, where they have resided for the past 22 years. He served as President of the Men's Golf Association. He also served on the Board of Directors for Fairway Oaks. Bob made friends everywhere, and the Glades was no exception.
Bob and his brother, Ed, initiated a Men’s Shopping Night on the pretext that the guys would get together over dinner and drinks during the Christmas season and then shop for gifts for their wives. Over the years, the dinner and drinks at the Westview Lounge outlasted the shopping, but the event was always the highlight of the year and a very special reunion of 12 good friends. Shopping Night has endured for over 50 years and was the source of many happy memories.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Betty Biel and Eva Jacobs.
He is survived by Susan, his beloved wife of 43 years, and his brother, Charles Edward Compher. He is also survived by his 3 children, Janet Compher, Rob Compher (Karen), and John Compher (Debbie); his grandchildren Brandon Compher (Britt), Marissa Dreisch, Ryan Dreisch (Stacy), Courtney Waters (Dan), Nicholas Compher, Matthew Compher, and Jackson Compher; and by his great-grandchildren, Noelle, Kayleigh, Payson, Cohen, Linen, and Brinley.
Bob was a friend to everyone he met, and he was so easy to talk to. He remembered everyone’s name, and many of his friends he called “brothers”. Susan’s family thought of him as one of their own. He was an avid Ravens and Orioles fan. Bob loved to sing and often broke out into spontaneous song whenever he got the chance. Above all else, Bob loved spending time with his family, and annual vacations spent in Ocean City with his and Susan’s families was a highlight of every summer for over 50 years.
Bob Compher was one of a kind. There will never be another like him. The world is a sadder place without him. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed.
