Ron Stiff -1940-2021 A life well lived.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, M. Ronald Stiff, PhD. Ron (Ronnie) was born in Philadelphia on August 3, 1940 to Ruth Helm Stiff and Malcolm Ballard Stiff. Raised in Bethesda, Maryland, he attended Walter Johnson High School followed by Cornell University, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. He started his career as an electrical engineer for General Electric where he worked on missile guidance systems, jet engines, and major home appliances. After graduate work, he transitioned into academia and taught marketing at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Baltimore.

Ron was married to Judith Lloyd in 1962, and they have three children, David, Susan, and Philip. David is married to Pritha Mitra-Stiff and they have a son Nikhil. Susan is married to Brian Parmelee, and they have three children - Brendon (married to Ashley), Trevor (married to Haley), and Melissa. Philip is married to Pamela Howard and is the father of Nathan. Ron and Judy were passionate travelers and took several sabbaticals abroad teaching future doctors and business persons; their favorite destinations included New Zealand and Botswana. Judy passed away in 2013.

Ron is also survived by Roberta Van Meter, his partner of the last five years, and they enjoyed traveling together. Ron cherished Baltimore and scheduled his days around Orioles and Ravens games and strolls to restaurants in Little Italy and Harbor East. He supported education, fine and musical arts, libraries and museums in the city. Ron was a lifelong learner and had recently participated in coursework at the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where he dabbled in opera and renewed his love of jazz music.

Ron engaged with everyone he met and always took care to ask about others' families and interests. An only child, he relished time with his extended family and looked forward to every gathering.

The Thanksgivings in Baltimore
The day in Portland when you and Judy got off the cruise boat.
The lunch in the inner harbor.
I remember when I told you what my teaching salary was and you laughed and said they don’t pay science teachers the same as business teachers. Lol.
How many times did you meet me and Liz outside the building so we could park the car?
I’m definitely going to miss you. Already do.

Condolences to Ron's family. I met Ron when he and my cousin Roberta came to Richmond,VA to visit. We all enjoyed time spent here eating in and out and visiting the VMFA. I also enoyed pictures and cards of all their travels. I felt that they really enjoyed each other, making the most of their time together albeit a short one. May his memories comfort Roberta and all his family.
