Born on March 10, 1945, he was the son of the late Rufus and Elizabeth Shumate. He was the father of four children – Rufus (Shawn) H. Shumate III, LTC, late Philip Shumate, Brian (Amanda) Shumate, and Amy (Nathan) Rodgers; seven grandchildren – Alexis, Nathan, Addison, Nicholas, Logan, Aiden, and Colin; and sister – Rebecca Richardson.
Bud will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and attention to detail. He dedicated his life to supporting his family, church, community, and country. In 1967, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, and served over 20 years in the U.S. Army. He served his community as the president of the neighborhood civic association, Boy Scouts leader, sports coach, and volunteer to build/repair homes and teach/read at his church.

Burial in West Point, NY and memorial in Annandale, VA will be planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to your local hospital or Howard County General Hospital to support the doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals during the Covid-19 response.
A Memorial Service will be held at Holy Spirt Catholic Church (5121 Woodland Way, Annandale, VA 22003) on August 1st @ 11am
