It is with profound love that we announce Stephanie answered the Lord’s call to come home, is now in His heavenly care, and is embracing the well-earned rest that she spent a lifetime robustly avoiding.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois, but due to her dad’s government work, their cozy family of three relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland, where Stephanie established strong roots and was blessed with a long, happy, healthy, loving and vibrant life. She attended the University of Maryland Nursing School, and was graced with several life-long sisters from the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She served as a Registered Nurse at Walter Reed Medical Center, and she loved her nursing career, but there was a greater love, one of being a wife and mother, and it was during this time that she met her first love, Jim. He was in the Army, so they married and shipped off to Okinawa, Japan. Upon their return, the remainder of her life was cemented in Laurel, and she welcomed her next two loves, her children, Wayne and Linda. Stephanie had an unwavering faith and was an active member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Her selflessness, motherly love, and her desire to help others ran deep, and this was evident in her role of neighborhood nurse where she was just a phone call away to those in need, and she also served as the school nurse at Montpelier Elementary. She was always a social butterfly among the Montpelier community, where she enjoyed being the neighborhood Avon lady, and would be seen making deliveries while zipping around on her moped. She was happy to welcome her next two loves, her grandchildren, Hunter and Kaylie. Not one to sit still, she had gone back to work and become the front desk manager at the Knights Inn. She eventually retired to enjoy the golden years travelling domestically and hitting the casinos with her husband, until his passing. Her final love was that of a wagging tail, her dog, Bud D. Boy. This happy family of two, along with the companionship and daily comedic shenanigans with her best friend, Cathy Beaver, carried her through her delightful, final years. Buddy has been well-cared for and is now part of Wayne’s family. We are grateful for every moment we were blessed to share with her, and find comfort that she will live on in our hearts and memories as a cherished mom, grandma, aunt, cousin, and a dear friend to many.
Stephanie was preceded by her parents, Oscar and Catherine Smith, and husband, James Nordberg, and is survived by her son, Wayne Nordberg, her daughter, Linda Holder, her son-in-law, Eddie Garcia, her grandson, Hunter Nordberg, and her granddaughter, Kaylie Holder.
