
June Hastings was born Jan 4 1939 in Pomeroy, a small farming community in eastern Washington State. She attended a one room school for her first seven grades, then graduated Valedictorian for her class from Pomeroy HIgh School in 1956. She got at teaching degree from Washington State University in 1960 and taught high school in Kittitas High School before going back to WSU to get her Masters in Sociology.
June moved to San Francisco after graduating from WSU and taught in in schools and other learning centers. She lived on Haight Street at the edge of the Haight-Ashbury District during the flower power revolution. She met her husband Gaston Booker at a young Democrats rally and they were married in 1975. They moved to Chicago in 1977, and lived there until moving to Columbia Maryland in 1983.
In Columbia, June was active in the Columbia Garden Association, and worked with the city planners to develop the individual garden plots that people could rent to grow their own food. She was president of the association during it's formative years. June and Gaston were active in various community and Church activities while living in Columbia.
She is survived by a brother, Alan, and a nephew, Austin, both living in California, and numerous Step children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Columbia Baptist Fellowship, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, MD 21045, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 12:00 pm.
