Alma was born July 25, 1930 to L.B. Mitchell and Bertha Lawler Mitchell. She grew up in Corpus Christi TX and graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1947, afterward attending college for one year. During her time in Corpus Christi she was a member of South Bluff Methodist Church. She worked briefly in a doctor's office.
She met Willis Hanson at a Civic Center dance while he was stationed at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. After Willis returned from a tour in the Pacific they were married April 28, 1950. After returning from their honeymoon in Mexico City they moved to Columbia MO where Willis pursued his education. Alma worked as a dental assistant and later as an IBM keypunch operator until the birth of their first daughter. In 1956 they moved to Hallsville MO where they welcomed their second daughter and raised their family.
Alma was active in PTA and volunteered at Boone County Hospital. She was also involved in various church activities over many years. After the children were grown she worked as a cashier at the University of Missouri for fifteen years. In more recent years she cared for her husband at home until he moved into long term care. Alma enjoyed spending time with her many friends, always ready to lend a sympathetic ear and helping hand.
She is survived by her husband and daughters Brenda Hanson and Laura Hanson, one brother L.B. Mitchell Jr (Deanne), niece, Evangeline Welch, two great nieces, Caitlyn and Jillian Welch and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Coyote Hill Children's Home.
