

Barbara A. Nistendirk, 92, of Columbia, passed away Thursday, January 4th at Cedarhurst Senior Living. Visitation will be 10-11am, Friday, January 12th at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West Columbia, MO. Funeral service will begin at 11am, followed by burial in Columbia Cemetery 30 East Broadway, Columbia, MO.
Barbara was born May 14th, 1931 in Norfolk, VA to James H. and Dezzie Atwood Turner. In 1953 she married Eugene C. Nistendirk in Norfolk, VA where they had met while he was serving in the US Navy and she was working as a secretary on the naval base. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Columbia where they have resided since. She began working for the local telephone company as an operator then took a job in pathology at the University of Missouri. She later found a career of 40 years as a professional secretary at the Columbia Orthopedic Group. She had a love of the water, having grown up in Norfolk and visiting family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Barbara was also a talented cellist, organist, pianist and accordion player; being part of a 4 – piece band playing in the Navy YMCA and Norfolk Eagle’s Lodge.
She is survived by her daughter, Jayne L. Chase of Leawood, KS; grandsons, Matthew (Liz) Chase of Olathe, KS and Alex (Kate) Chase of Kansas City, MO; three great-grandchildren, Stephen, Luna and Oliver; loving family, close friends and her beloved dog, Buffy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Nistendirk and her parents.
