Ellen Garrett, 78, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in Columbia. Ellen was born on September 23, 1947, in Columbia to Norman and Dorothy (Sapp)Arnold. She graduated from Ashland High School, now known as Southern Boone High School, and she remained proud of her roots throughout her life. Prior to retirement, Ellen spent her career at Shelter Insurance, working in the Underwriting Department as a Life Correspondent and retired in 2012. After retiring, Ellen found her joy though babysitting in her home.
The children she looked after were like her grandchildren and those families became an extended part of her own. Ellen loved her family deeply. She is survived by her daughter, Shannon Garrett; her son, Jason Garrett both of Columbia; her sister, Mary Short and her husband Joe of Hartsburg; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers Richard, Gary, and Jerry Arnold.
Anyone who knew Ellen remembers she always had to stop to talk to and pet any dog she saw, no matter where it was. In honor of her love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to Columbia Second Chance or to an animal rescue of your choice. A gathering to honor Ellen’s life will be held later.
