Jeanne was born July 21, 1936, in Monroe City, Missouri, to Charles F. and Mary Lee (Dowell) Tipton. She met her husband, Jim, when she worked for him waiting tables at the Deluxe Cafe in Monroe City. They were married on February 22, 1955, and he preceded her in death on April 11, 2011.
Jeanne grew up on a farm west of Monroe City, but really made her mark in Columbia, where she owned and operated her Merle Norman store for over 57 years and also owned and operated The Lingerie Shop, which was a very successful business on Broadway. She was one of the oldest store merchants in Columbia with over 50 years of business in downtown Columbia and the Columbia Mall.
Even though she was a serious business owner she had a fun side as well, and we heard many times about her adventures of water skiing on Thanksgiving. We also have pictures of people lined down the sidewalk on days that Beanie Babies were delivered to her store. She also had a tendency to use her sons as "models" for girls that were in her store to get their ears pierced; they complied and told the girls it didn't hurt at all, and Kim asked her many times if he could get an application as a fitting room attendant at The Lingerie Shop; she declined! She loved all things Christmas and had several rooms in her home that were Christmas themed 12 months out of the year.
One of her hardest crosses for her to bear was watching her son, Kevin, decline in health and pass before her and Jim.
Survivors include sons, David Kim and Kimberly of Darby, MT and Charles Keith Buckman and Karen of Fair Grove, MO; grandchildren, Agustus Buckman of Missoula, MT, Emma Kate, Salt Lake City, UT, Korrie, Springfield, MO and Kurt, Fair Grove, MO; a sister, Margaret Raetz, Columbia, MO and a brother, Wayne (RuthAnn) Tipton of Monroe City, MO. She also had 2 very special co-workers who have been a huge blessing to her and her family, Tisha Parsons and Jo Coffman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles F. and Mary Lee Tipton; her husband of 56 years, Jim Buckman, son, Kevin, a brother, Charles F. Tipton, Jr; and three sisters, Pat Tipton, Charlene Jobe, and Mary Sue Ruble.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, MO. Visitation will begin at 10am with a rosary at 11am and burial following at the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the March of Dimes, or to the Humane Society. We are sure that Jeanne was welcomed by a pack of her dogs once she hit the gates of heaven!
