

Glen Lee Ward, lovingly known as “Bummer the Drummer,” passed away on September 2, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on March 21, 1947, in Fayette, Missouri, Glen lived a life filled with rhythm, music, and love that touched countless people.
A gifted drummer and singer, Glen’s passion for music was the heartbeat of his life. He became well known as the founder of the Kansas City Streetband, and his unmistakable beat brought joy to audiences throughout Columbia, Missouri, where he spent much of his career. In addition to performing, Glen dedicated himself to inspiring young musicians by starting and running the City Wide Drumline in Columbia, an effort that gave countless students the chance to experience the joy of rhythm, teamwork, and self-expression.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Gaines and Orientha Ward, his sister, Jaqueline Eubanks, his beloved wife and soulmate, Kathryn Ward, and his son-in-law, Brian Lewis.
He is survived by his daughters, Janis Bultemeier and her husband, Adam, of Columbia, Missouri, and Jennifer Lewis of Joliet, Illinois; his four cherished grandchildren, Oliver and Harlow Bultemeier and Maverick and Scarlett Lewis, who brought him endless pride and joy.
Known for his kindness, humor, and generous spirit, Glen will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, musician, and friend. His legacy lives on in the music he created, the students he inspired, and the love he gave so freely.
A celebration of Glen’s life will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Missouri.
