Iris was born April 24, 1924 in Golden, IL to L. Vernon and Helen Ideus Lubben. At the age of 19 she left family and friends, boarded a train for California to marry her handsome Marine, Karl Goebel who was stationed in San Diego. Even though war time was difficult she and Karl truly enjoyed their time together in San Diego. There she worked in retail sales, working for Marston’s Department Store and later worked at Parks Department Store after they settled in Columbia, MO. She was a homemaker for their two children Bruce and Karla. She and Karl were both strong faithful Christians active members of Trinity Lutheran Church and later Broadway Christian Church. Iris was a very sociable woman who had a smile and conversation for everyone. Serving others was always important, whether it be supporting the Senior Center, the Ladies Guild, a Sunday school teacher, on the PTA, Cub Scout, Campfire Girl mom or University Hospital volunteer. In retirement she enjoyed traveling with Karl in the family camper. They spent 62 years together before his death in 2006.
She is survived by her two children, Bruce (Shari) Goebel and Karla (Randy) Huck both of Columbia; grandchildren, Mindy (Christian) Harvat of Montclair, NJ, Brandon (Stacey) Huck of Ashland, MO, and Sarah Elizabeth Goebel of Kansas City, MO; great-grandchildren, Celissa Kennedy, Molly Huck, Beckam Huck, and Aerix Huck. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Karl.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Broadway Christian Church or the Food Bank of Central and NE Missouri.
