James “Pops” Lowes, 78, of Columbia, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024. Cremation and a private family service will be held near his birthday. He was born March 15, 1945 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Ray and Mary Varnum Lowes. In 1959, their family moved to the family farm in Callaway County, and in 1962, he graduated from Fulton High School. After graduating, he joined the US Air force and served from 1964 – 1970; where earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his discharge, he moved back to Cape Girardeau and resided there until he moved his family back to the farm in Callaway County. He raised cattle and cared for his horses while on the farm. Away from the farm he worked several years as a guard for the State Penitentiary in Fulton. Away from work, he enjoyed bird watching and loved spending time with his grandkids.
Pops is survived by his children, Jerry (Tronda Wathen) and Sandy Vaughn of Columbia; grandchildren, Gary Dale Wathen, Shyann Vaughn, and Dallas Vaughn; sisters, Mary Faye Lloyd of Jefferson City; Stella Craig of St. Louis; sisters, Judy Barnes and Prudy Ireland of Columbia, and Barbara Stone of Stephens; several nieces and nephews and a loving extended family. He was preceded in death by a brother; Ray Lowes, and his parents.
A celebration of life will be held at the Stephens Community Center in Stephens, MO on March 15th from 11AM to 2PM.
