John Thomas Baldus

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Thomas Baldus, of Alleman, Iowa. John passed peacefully on the evening of September 1, 2026, after battling liver cancer for the past six years.

John was born on September 29, 1944, to Benedict and Florence Baldus of Eagle Grove, Iowa. John attended Eagle Grove High School graduating in 1962, went on to graduate from Eagle Grove Junior College in 1965; and also attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa.

In the summer of 1966 John joined the Army National Guard of Iowa. He completed his basic training at Ft. Leonard, MO, and went on to serve his six-year commitment in the 747th Maintenance Battalion, Eagle Grove, Iowa. John received an honorable discharge from the Army National Guard of Iowa on August 30, 1972, and earned the rank of Specialist Six (E-6).

John worked as a licensed insurance agent for most of his professional career. Most recently John worked for Taylor Insurance Services of West Des Moines where he retired in 2014 as a Vice President.

Classic cars and building street rods were in John’s blood. John built multiple street rods over the years, including a 1929 Ford, 1934 Sedan, 1936 Ford Coupe, and a 1953 Ford delivery. He also enjoyed going to car shows all over the mid-west with his friends.

Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. John was always willing to help others and never hesitated when someone needed a hand.

John is preceded in death by his parents Benedict and Florence Baldus, his sister Patricia Harney (Tom, Becky and Ed). He is survived by his wife Sandi Baldus and children Tony Baldus (Michele, Matt and Haley) and Tracy Hawbaker (Mike, Lexi and Tori), sister Janet Miller (Missy and John), sister Marilyn Bullinger (John, Molly and Jon), as well as many good friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Loving Arms Memory Care and Assisted Living, 1300 E 24th Street, Sedalia, Missouri 65301 or St. Croix Hospice, 2911 West Broadway Blvd., Suite 5, Sedalia, Missouri 65301, which provided wonderful care in John’s final weeks.
