Joe was severely injured due to complications at birth. Medical specialists at the time advised that he would not likely live past six months. Joe was eventually diagnosed as having cerebral palsy, impacting his physical movements and communication.
In 1966, Joe moved to what was then known as the Woodhaven Learning Center campus on the south side of Columbia. That environment provided him with necessary medical care, social interaction and educational instruction. Even though he visited his family for holidays and breaks, Woodhaven truly became his home.
As living in the community became preferable to campus living, Woodhaven began to move its clients to individual houses. In 1995, Joe moved into a house that his parents had built for his needs. Woodhaven continued to provide his care, but in a setting that gave him more independence. Participating in the day program at ACT (now Impact Support Services) provided even more interaction.
Joe was an avid fan of all MU sports. He especially enjoyed attending football and basketball games. He was proud to be part of the focus group to design Mizzou Arena. He was also an enthusiastic yet unofficial part of the band for a while.
Over the years, Joe connected with so many staff members. His easy-going nature and infectious smile helped him make friends easily.
Joe was preceded in death by his father in 1997 and his mother in 2000. He is survived by his brother, David Machens of Mission Hills, KS, along with his sister-in-law, Marcia, and his nieces, Kathryn & Elizabeth.
David and his family would like to thank the numerous staff members who have helped Joe throughout the years. To many of his caretakers, Joe became like family.
A celebration of life will be held at Christian Fellowship Church on Wednesday, September 23. Visitation will start at 10:00 am with services at 11:00 am. Committal service will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery Columbia, MO. Joe would have enjoyed seeing Mizzou attire.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joe’s honor may be made to Woodhaven or Christian Fellowship Church.
