He was born in Columbia, Missouri on May 4, 1940. He graduated from Hickman High School and attended the University of Missouri, Columbia. He was the President of the Future Farmers of America (F.F.A.), during this time period. On April 3, 1960, he was united in marriage to Wanda Nadine Weldon.
Joe worked on the family farm and as an entrepreneur in insurance and real estate. He was also employed by the US Postal Service, the Columbia Daily Tribune, Mahan Construction and Remodeling, and Mizzou Athletics Security. He was active in the Lions Club International, a member of Bethel Baptist Church and oversaw the Bethel-Hickam Cemetery Operations.
Joe was passionate about family, staying active in his community, and volunteering for multiple organizations. He enjoyed reading books, watching Westerns and professional wrestling with his son and grandsons.
He is survived by his children, Stuart (Janna) Mahan of Ashland, Mike (Christi) Mahan of Jacksonville, FL, and Stephanie Mahan of Columbia; grandchildren, Austin, Kayla and Jameson (Angel Jacobs and son Liam). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Mahan II and Alliene Mahan, and brother, Major Douglas Frank Mahan as well as his wife, Wanda.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:30 am on August 23, 2022 at Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a private interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, Missouri.
