Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were her parents; her siblings Ruth (Gene deceased) Mansor, Jack Ross, Mary (Waldo deceased) Dothage, Steiner Ross; her in-laws Stanley and Rowena (Crane) Welbern; and her granddaughter Kim Schnell Dobson.
Joyce grew up with her family in Joseph, Utah and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life. She attended Joseph Elementary, middle school in Elsinore, high school in Monroe and college at BYU in Provo. She grew up helping on the farm and playing in the mountains and irrigation ditches.
Joyce met her husband when she came to Rocheport to visit her sister, Mary, who had married a Missouri Navy boy. During her visit she went to the Rocheport grocery store and there she met Bub Welbern who was working at his family’s store. They married in Joseph, Utah and returned to Rocheport, Missouri to raise their family near her husband’s parents. When her children were small, she did a lot of sewing and taught sewing classes for 4H. For many years her and her husband enjoyed boating in a house boat at Lake of the Ozarks with their children. Joyce and Bub loved square dancing. Her husband died in a hayride accident when she was only 36 so she started working at and managing Welbern Store which they had purchased from his parents. With the store being a central gathering spot in town, she knew everyone in town and in the surrounding area. Many times, when there was news to be delivered to a resident that the family did not want to provide via a phone call, they would contact Joyce and she would go and deliver the news. Her sister, Mary, was her only sibling that lived in the area and they were close all their lives. Joyce traveled many times with Mary and her husband.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Memorial Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri. The service will be live streamed and recorded. Arrangements by Dignity Memorial Funeral Home.
