She was born on Friday May 13, 1938, in Walden, New York.
Marlene graduated from from Walden High School in 1956 and immediately started working as the school's secretary. When her children had grown Marlene reentered the workforce doing secretarial jobs for a temp agency. Some of the temporary jobs lasted for months. At her last temp job, Emerson, she was asked to become permanent staff and worked there until she retired. In retirement Marlene volunteered at the free clinic in St Charles.
She met her future husband, Vernon Hale Hawkins, Jr. in the third grade. They married on April 5, 1961, and they moved to Altus Oklahoma for two years then to St. Charles Missouri where she spent the next 55 years.
After moving into the house on West Adams, great friendships were formed with the neighbours, eventually forming the Crabgrass Association. There were many patio parties, fish fries and holiday celebrations over the years. In retirement the Crabgrass also travelled to many places across the US together.
Marlene enjoyed dancing (even tried belly dancing), painting, crafts, crotchet and visiting local wineries.
Marlene is survived by her husband of 65 years, Vernon Hale Hawkins Jr, son Darryl (Kathryn) Hawkins, daughter Laura (Lawrence) Collard and grandchildren Nathaniel and Rachael Collard.
There will be a private family service at a later date.
