

A Celebration of Life services will be at 1:00pm Thursday July 14, 2016 at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70W, Columbia, MO. Interment and Firefighters Last Call will follow at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, in Centralia, MO.
Curtus was preceded in death by his father Robert Atkins & his Grandparents Curtus & Anna Belle Barnes.
Survivors include his daughter Lindsey McCoy and her husband Kyle, of Columbia, MO, grandchildren Andrew Murray, Brenden Murray, Mackenzie McCoy, Cameron McCoy, and Colleen McCoy. Mother Doris Ann” Barnes” Dill, of Columbia, sibling Retired Division Chief Robert “Bob” Atkins, Jr. and wife Darla, of Columbia, Aunt Clara Carter, niece Heather Atkins and nephew Brad Atkins (Amanda), both of Columbia and his extended Fire Service Family.
Ret. Lt. Curtus Atkins, was born May 8, 1955, to Robert and Doris Atkins, in Moberly, MO, he later graduated from Hickman High School, in 1973. He was a career firefighter for the City of Columbia Fire Department from June 22, 1981 and retired as a Lieutenant with 20 years of service on July 12, 2001. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Boone County Fire Protection District with 10 years of service. Lt. Atkins worked as an adjunct instructor for the University Of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute and for the Callaway Nuclear plants fire brigade for 25 years. He enjoyed being on his farm by spending time watching and feeding his horses.
When they say that Firefighting is in your blood, heart and soul they are talking about Curtus Atkins. He was a friend to everyone he met and would go out of his way to help family, friends and even people he didn’t know. He was the best son, father, brother and grandfather. He will truly be missed.
