

Sarah K. (Sally) Mathis died peacefully at University Hospital on August 30, 2016. She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn Hemry and her stepfather Scott Hemry. She has an older brother Thomas Brown of Wichita, Kansas. Her husband Jerry Mathis survives her along with her two stepdaughters, Liz Boyles of Columbia and Anise Foster of Wheaton, IL and her grandchildren, Caleb, Bekah, Noah and Zach Boyles, and Avery and Gus Foster.
Sally attended Stephens College and the University of Arizona where she earned a Bachelor’s of Education. She later earned a Masters of Education. She traveled, worked and lived in California for a number of years before moving to Kansas City to teach elementary school.
She and her husband Jerry reunited at their 20th Hickman High School reunion and never parted. Married in 1981, Jerry and Sally lived in Texas for several years before returning to Columbia where she worked at the University of Missouri Athletic Department until her retirement in 2006. She was an advisor at the Chi Omega sorority and supported a number of charities in Columbia. She enjoyed playing bridge, mahjong, reading and traveling. She will be remembered as a loyal and trusted friend to many.
A celebration of life will be held at Memorial Funeral Home at 1:30 on Friday, October 14th, with a reception to follow from 3:00-5:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Voluntary Action Center, Salvation Army, or Chi Omega in her name.
