Sherry Kaye Dobbs, 76, died on August 31, 2026 at University Hospital. She was born on April 29, 1950, in West Plains, MO. The Dobbs family spent their early years in southern Missouri and Indiana before settling in Columbia. Sherry graduated from Hickman High School in 1968, then earned a B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
From 1975-2008 Sherry taught English and writing at West Junior High School, and was herself a beautiful writer. A dedicated master teacher, she inspired thousands of students to enjoy reading and to write clearly. She mentored many new teachers from UMC. As a professional educator she was well respected for her thorough, articulate, sensible input. She was active in Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O. International), which provides educational assistance to deserving women.
Sherry had a warm personality, superior intellect, and a positive outlook. As a friend she was dependable, loyal and true. Her loving kindness, quiet strength, steady hand, listening ear, and generous heart will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her sisters Marilyn Schappert, Jeanie Dobbs, Sue Dobbs, and Carol Kvanvig; nephews David Schappert, Philip Schappert, and Jared Kvanvig; niece Brittany Kvanvig; and stepchildren Seena Spessard, Dirk Boyle, and Quint Boyle. She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph C. and Edna Dobbs, and by her husband Rodney Boyle.
A celebration of life will be held on October 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St., Columbia MO 65201, with visitation the hour before. Interment will take place on October 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, MO.
