
A private graveside service will be held for Mr. Smith at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia.
The son of Sidney E. Smith and Nettie Peden Smith, he was born on Nov. 25, 1915, in Fountain Inn, S.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Mavis G. Smith, and his sister, Janet Smith Owings.
Mr. Smith was educated at Presbyterian College of South Carolina, Peabody College and the University of Illinois.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. While in the service, he met his wife, Mavis of Melbourne, Australia.
He served on the faculty of several universities, including the University of North Carolina, Florida State University, Florida Presbyterian College and James Madison University. He spent the bulk of his career, through retirement, at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Stewart, known lovingly as Padie by his family, and his wife, Mavis, were members of the American Hemerocallis Society and were talented gardeners. He spent many enjoyable hours working in his day lily garden. He was also a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
Mr. Smith is survived by a cousin, Lois Curry Morton of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Valda Collie and family of Melbourne, Australia; and several nieces and nephews.
