
Our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Elmo Lavelle Walker, age 92, passed away quietly on December 29, 2011 in Logan, Utah. He was born June 18, 1919 in Poplarville, Mississippi to Ursin Walker, Jr. and Anne Stuart. He married Myrna Wynema Cochran on October 3, 1941 in Columbia, Mississippi; the marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple on December 9,1941. They had three children. Elmo is survived by his son Marion Lavelle (Sue Ann) and two daughters Wynema Louise Warren and Mary Jean Walker Faison (Ross). He had 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wynema; his parents; son-n law (Reed Warren); a grandson (Spencer Warren) and two siblings (Victor and May). Elmo and Wynema were looking forward to their 70th anniversary this past October. She passed away in April of 2011.
Elmo was a member of the “Greatest Generation”. He served in the Army in North Africa, Italy and France during WWII. He also was called to duty during the Korean War. He lived a full and active life. He realized the importance of education at an early age. Elmo graduated with a Masters degree in vocational counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi before enrolling in medical school. He graduated from Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas in 1956. He established a family medicine practice in Clinton, Mississippi and practiced in the Greater Jackson area until 1996 when he and Wynema moved back to Columbia. He was a kind and caring physician and was loved by his patients, family and friends. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities within the church. He enjoyed singing and had a wonderful voice. He was active in church choirs and local operas. For a time he was a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Elmo also loved reading and was usually found with a book in his hand or on his lap. He was an avid student of the scriptures. He read and studied them every day. He wrote beautiful poems and left a legacy of poems for his family.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia, Mississippi. Services will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 10:00 am on Saturday with burial in Darbun, Mississippi to follow
