Joyce Slocum Pounds passed from this life into her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 95. She was surrounded by her family, singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” as she peacefully passed at Marion General Hospital. Joyce was born in the Bedwell Community in Marion County, Mississippi, on April 7, 1930, to Alfred and Cola Slocum. She married the love of her life, Irvin Henry Pounds, and they shared 54 wonderful years together. They made their home in the New Hope Community, where she lived the remainder of her life. Joyce was truly happiest when she was cooking and serving others in some way. She had a servant’s heart and was known throughout the community for her hospitality, her kindness, and her unwavering love for people. She sent countless cards of encouragement, baked more cakes than anyone could count, and prepared meals for people throughout her community. There probably were not many in the area who had not eaten at her table, received a card in the mail, or had one of her cakes delivered to their doorstep. Her cakes were “Ten Mile Famous.” Joyce loved to laugh and brought joy with her wherever she went. She was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church and she praised Jesus for her life and lived each day as a reflection of His love. She will be remembered for her Christ-like spirit, her servant’s heart, and her one-of-a-kind, joyful laugh. Her family will forever be grateful for the example she gave us of what it means to truly follow Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Irvin Henry Pounds; a daughter, Charlotte Pounds; a granddaughter, Jade Pounds; a great grandson, Wyatt Henry Pounds and two sisters, LaFaye Slocum and Lynda Nichols. Joyce is survived by two children; Sherri Pounds Robertson (Terry) and Sherman Lamar Pounds (Terry Lynn); four grandchildren: Tate Robertson (Lauren), Misti Stampley (Rich), Jacob Pounds (Chelsea), and Caleb Pounds (Brianna); six great-grandchildren: Ike Stampley (Tori), Connor Stampley, Macy Robertson, Bryleigh Robertson, Jack Pounds, and Vallie Pounds; one honorary grandson: Ben White; and two nieces and two nephews.
