

On Monday, September 7, 2026, Kathryn Jane "Kathy" Broome, of Hazelhurst, Mississippi, passed from this life into God's presence at the age of 75. She was born in Natchez, Mississippi to J.D. and Edna Louise Broome. Kathy received a bachelor's degree in education from Mississippi University for Women and dedicated her entire working career to teaching English in the public schools of Hattiesburg, Jackson, and Hazelhurst. She was devoted to her students and was known as an amazing English teacher until her retirement in 2025. She will be remembered as a sweet, loving, and caring person who dedicated her life to molding young minds. Kathy was a woman of many interests who found enjoyment in singing in church choirs, riding four wheelers, riding horses, and just watching the ducks at her pond. She was also an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for gatherings of her friends and family. Kathy will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Van Broome. Kathy is survived by her siblings, Linda B. Dunn and Jackson D. Broome, Jr.; nieces and nephews, James Luster, Michael Luster, Andrew Dunn (Leah), Andrea "Wendy" Stine, and Laura Dunn; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and her beloved dogs.
Private services were held at the graveside in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Bassfield where she was laid to rest at the foot of her grandmother, Lina Jane Broome.
