Mary Annette Rawls Thompson passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at the age of 93. Born in Columbia, MS, she spent her early career as an administrative assistant at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. After returning to Columbia in 1979, Mrs. Thompson worked for many years at City Hall in Columbia. She found great enjoyment in sewing, cooking, working in her yard, and nurturing her houseplants; but, her greatest delight came from her family. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Thompson was a member of The Red Hat Society and First United Methodist Church in Columbia where she was active with the United Methodist Women. She will be remembered as a flower child, hippie-type, who was ahead of her time and still known for her southern grace and charm. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Burl Thompson; special friend, Robert Harold Geiger; two sisters, Mattie Smyly and Ruby Price; four brothers, J. W. Rawls, Charles Rawls, John Rawls, and Giles Rawls; and two grandchildren, Keylee Jones and Lynlei Stampley. Mrs Thompson is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Haygood and her husband, Gary; a son, Bill Thompson; a sister, Lillian Thomae; four grandchildren, Ashley Boone, April Stampley, Shelbi Stovall and Spencer Stovall; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Gavin, Phoenix, Kinsley, and Brody. There will be a visitation at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm. A procession will leave the funeral home at 2:15pm going to Woodlawn Cemetery for a graveside service at 2:30pm officiated by Reverend Rob Grant. Gavin Armstrong, Tyler Armstrong, Cass Barnes, Scotty Boone, Berkley Hall, Hal Kittrell, Spencer Stovall, and Chuck Whitehead will assist as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials in her name to First United Methodist Church in Columbia.
