Melvin Cumpton

Melvin Cumpton, age 89 passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at his residence in Kokomo, MS. He was born in Dimmitt, TX and was a longtime resident of Kokomo. Mr. Cumpton was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He farmed with his family in New Mexico and Colorado and was a commercial truck driver from which he retired after 30 years. He was a member of Hurricane Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed his favorite pastime of watching westerns. He will surely be missed by his family and friends. Mr. Cumpton was preceded in death by his wife, Dimple Cumpton; daughters, Kimberly Mateo, and Kitza Parker; parents William Earl Cumpton, and Eva Ada Baker Cumpton; and a grandson, Lathon Peak. He is survived by two daughters, Belinda Moore and Mona Gail Cox; two sons, Rodney Cumpton, and Randall Cumpton; a sister-in-law, Carrie Taylor; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Mr. Cumpton will held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia, MS where family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until service time. Reverend Zach Smith will preside over services and interment will follow at Hurricane Creek Baptist Church Cemetery assisted by Joe Moore, Bryan Moore, Landon Peak, Ramsey Cumpton, Frank Forbes, and Tommy Parker, Jr. as pallbearers.

I'll never forget the coin trick with the cowboy hat! Also, I used to try to wake up before him and sneak into his chair. He'd come in the room and pick me up throw me in the air and we'd both laugh. I'll always love you, Grandpa.
