Melvin R. Porter, Jr., age 79 of Foxworth, MS passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2025. He was a graduate of West Marion High School Class of 1963 and the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in History. Melvin served the state of Mississippi at the Columbia Training School where he spent 17 years as a cottage parent. He later would work at Pioneer Aerospace and retired after 10 years of employment. In retirement, he enjoyed reading, watching movies and playing golf.
Melvin was a devout Christian and a licensed minister. He acquired a Master of Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and enjoyed serving local churches on occasions when called upon for pulpit supply. He was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church and served in the choir, finance committee, leader of the Brotherhood and as a Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin R. Porter, Sr. and Margaret Jean Alcorn Porter; a sister, Marlene Porter Dufloth; and honorary niece, Mackynlee Bedwell.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sisters, Sharon Porter of Foxworth, and Darlene Porter of Benbrook, TX; a brother, Stephen Porter (Susan) of Lake Jackson, TX; and numerous extended family members.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 6, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church in Foxworth. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the church with Dr. Jerry Watts and Reverend Kevin Crozier officiating. Burial will follow in Lott Memorial Cemetery assisted by Mark Bedwell, Connor Bedwell, Clyde Ginn, Duwane Brumfield, Pud Stringer, and Brent Slocum serving as pallbearers with the New Hope Senior Men's Sunday School Class as honorary pallbearers.
