Steve was a graduate of Texas State University where he achieved a Master of Education. For more than 20 years, he taught history and coached at several educational institutions, including most recently at La Joya High School in La Joya, TX where he retired.
Steve enjoyed many pleasures in life including being an avid golfer and was fortunate to display his talent participating in the South Texas Sr. Amateur PGA Tour.
Ultimately, Steve enjoyed loving his wife and family most. He especially loved the title “Paw-Paw” as it was evident by the love he gave.
Mr. Stewart was predeceased by his parents, Benny Stewart and Patricia Stewart; and a brother, Joseph Stewart.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Daphne Stewart of Navasota, TX; daughters, Nicole Puerta (Eddie) of Tomball, TX; Natalie Ann Stewart of College Station, TX; and Elizabeth Lowman (Nicolas) of Spring Hill, TN; a sister, Barbara Ann Stewart of Columbia; brothers, George Stewart of Columbia, and Robert Stewart of Gautier, MS; sister-in-law, Brenda Peterson (Tim) of Palacios, TX; brother-in-law, Tommy Wagley (Cathy) of Pickerington, OH; and four grandchildren, Havana Puerta, Crawford Lowman, Lauren Lowman, and Audrey Lowman.
A graveside service, officiated by Reverend David Rogers, will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia assisted by Eddie Puerta, Nicolas Lowman, Durwin Gipson, Jimmy Toland, Cass Barnes, and Quin Breland as pallbearers.
