Born in Columbia, Mississippi, to Van Wayne and Madeline Smith, he graduated from Columbia High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. A true craftsman and entrepreneur, Van was the owner and operator of Columbia Gun and Pawn for 22 years before making his home in Hattiesburg for the past two decades. A skilled gunsmith and passionate marksman, he found joy not only in his work but also in competition—earning recognition as a champion muzzleloader shooter across several southern states. Van was a man of many talents and interests. A lifelong classic car enthusiast, he especially looked forward to Cruisin’ the Coast each year. With his many passions came countless friendships. Van will be remembered for his big heart, generosity, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. His faith guided every part of his life—he loved the Lord deeply, always put God first, and looked forward with peace to the day he would be called home.
