Mrs. Verna Lois Haddox Moree, age 88 of Columbia, MS, died Wednesday morning, February 28, 2018 at The Grove in Columbia. She was born June 29, 1929 in Marion County, Mississippi to Ollie (Red) Haddox and Bessie Prine Haddox Bomar.
A member of the Improve Baptist Church, Mrs. Moree was preceded in death by her husband, Ruvell Moree; her parents; and brother, Roy Haddox. She is survived by her children, David (Dena) Moree of Troy, Alabama, Michael (Vicki) Moree of Columbia, Rhelda (Ronnie) Tetreau of Franklinton, Louisiana, and Scottie (Sissy) Moree of Mandeville, Louisiana; a brother, Ray Haddox of Anchorage, Alaska; and sisters, Willie Mae Broom, and Veta Ann Fortenberry, both of Columbia. A special place in her heart was held for the cherished thirteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great children, along with beloved cousins and a host of nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Improve School where she loved playing basketball and often reminisced about the memories there. Verna Lois and Ruvell were united in marriage on September 17, 1947 following his return from World War II. Their home was a place where all were welcome and many family and friends enjoyed the bounty of food from the family garden she prepared until late in life. Following Ruvell’s death in April 1990 after forty-three years of marriage, she retired from Columbia Training School, doing quite a bit of traveling which she loved, most especially to the Great Smokey Mountains. Since residing at The Grove, she was always looking for visits from family and friends, hearing the Bible read, and when she was able to ride around Marion County, eat out, and visit family cemeteries. Though quite physically limited, Verna Lois continued to love talking on the phone and eating good food, especially tomatoes.
More than anything she loved God and was thankful for His blessings. She loved each and every member of her family. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 12:00pm at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia where friends may visit with family beginning at 10:00am. Reverend Darel Daniels and Bishop Dewayne Moree will officiate at the service. Interment will follow at Improve Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gene Moree, Rex Moree, Dewayne Stuckey, Marty Hitt, Josh Regan, and Kendal Morris.
