Andrew Henry Schut, age 94, was born October 10, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to parents who immigrated from Holland. He was the youngest of six sons of George Schut and Jennie Lamain. His wife of 62 years predeceased him by five years. He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Joy Schut Docherty and Regina Lynne Schut Slatter. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Heather Docherty Brown, Elisabeth Docherty Shealy and Sara Docherty Berry. He had four great grandchildren: Rachel Grier Brown, Dalton Gabriel Brown, Victoria Rainn Brown and Bryson Lee Berry. Preceding him in death is his wife, Linnea Amelia Rehrig Schut.
Mr. Schut, formerly of Columbus, Ohio worked in several capacities. He most recently was a circulation manager for a weekly newspaper in Columbus. He worked as a Fuller Brush salesman and later worked in Grand Rapids, Michigan with Child Evangelism Fellowship. His lifelong desire was to be a minister in some capacity and he even went to California for a season of training with New Tribes Mission. After retiring from his various careers, he and his wife traveled out of the country to Israel and traveled to many campgrounds in the US with the Good Sam Club. For several years, Mr. Schut was the chaplain for his Good Sam chapter. Mr. Schut and his wife were long time members of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. In May 2012, Mr. and Mrs. Schut relocated to Florence, SC to be closer to family.
Mr. Schut was loved by many for his kind, loving manner. He was always eager to make new friends and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. He loved to talk about Jesus and the Bible and enjoyed discussing so many aspects of scripture. His last years found him in Southland Health Care Center in Florence where he was called the mayor of Southland because he wanted to make every new resident feel at home in the facility. He participated in the activities provided by Southland. His ten o'clock coffee became a ritual. While many of his friends have gone on before him, he will be missed by both family and friends in Ohio and South Carolina. His favorite scripture was “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” and he is celebrating there now.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Elmwood Cemetery.
